Abstract
The effect of furosemide on plasma insulin concentration was studied in healthy young volunteer. The studies were performed on arbitrary day of normal life, the day furosemide injection, and subsequent three days after the injection.
The subjects were deprived of food overnight and given 500m1 of drinking water a 8:00 am and remained lying in bed until noon.
On the day of diuretic injection, the subjects were injected 40mg furosemide intravenously at 10:00 during the procedure.
And then fasting blood samples were obtained two hours after furosemide injection.
Analysis of fasting serum potassium and sodium, plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were repeated for a period of study.
The results were as follows.
1. The changes of fasting plasma insulin concentration after the furosemide administration showed an marked decrease, which recovered within subsequent three days.
2. The changes of serum potassium concentration after diuretic administration were similar to those. of plasma insulin concentration, although the variations were not so wide.
3. Fasting plasma sugar was risen after furosemide administration and showed still heavy on subsequent third day.
4. Serum sodium concentration was decreased after furosemide administration and continued to be lower throughout the remainder of the observation on low sodium diet.
5. It was discussed that furosemide induced hyperglycemia was strongly mediated by the decreased endogenous insulin production.
